nordtermNordic cooperation in the terminology field through common projects, the exchange of information and experiences, and the organisation of conferences and workshops. The most important event is the bi-annual terminology conference organised on a rotational basis by the Nordic terminology entities.

This year’s conference, Nordterm 2013, was organised in Stockholm 17–20 June by the Swedish Terminology Center TNC. The topic was “From basic work to maintenance – terminology work step by step”, with focus on the four main steps of a terminology project: planning, execution, presentation and management.

The two-day conference program covered a broad range of topics. The programme, the abstracts and the slides of the different presentations are available at the Nordterm 2013 website (click on the titles for the slides and on the link for the abstracts).

I was invited to address the terminological challenges involved in EU multilingual law-making. In my contribution I discussed the norms that govern our work, the role of terminological awareness, how we work, the tools we use, and recent developments such as the DGT’s Terminology Framework with indicators to measure the terminology work (slides and abstract, see link above).

A peculiarity of this conference is that it is traditionally organised on an intercomprehension basis in the Scandinavian languages. Interpretation is sometimes provided into and from Finnish.
