TermCoord at the University of Luxembourg

Since 2012, TermCoord has been cooperating with university terminology and language departments on terminology projects for feeding IATE. The students work on terminology projects, following the requirements for IATE terminology work and respective guidelines. From 2013 the University of Luxembourg, in cooperation with the Terminology Coordination Unit of the European Parliament, has added a new module on Terminology to their “Master in Learning and Communication in Multilingual and Multicultural Contexts“.
This semester´s module, “Multilingual communication and terminology in the EU“, starts today. The series of lectures and presentations aims to give an overview of the philosophy and practice of multilingualism in the EU, in particular within the functioning of the EU Institutions and in the legislative process. Furthermore it aims to demonstrate the importance of Terminology for maintaining multilingualism and for the uniformity of legislation and its implementation
Lectures are held in English, French and German by members and collaborators of TermCoord, and by terminologists of the European Parliament. They focus on: the legal background of Multilingualism in the EU, international and interinstitutional cooperation in Terminology and on Terminology management in the multilingual environment of the EU Institutions (Rodolfo Maslias); legal terminology in a multilingual environment (Violina Stamtcheva); specialised language in an international environment (Ciprian Dumea); a terminology project with hands-on exercises on a test template of the IATE database (Viola Pongracz); and the latest approaches to term mining and lexicography, adapted to the latest trends and the new globalised media reality (Maria-Pia Montoro).
Students have the possibility to undertake a one-month study visit in the Terminology Coordination Unit of the European Parliament, where they can practice their acquired knowledge by participating actively in terminology and communication work, together with the permanent staff and a team of highly skilled trainees.
