IATE Term of the Week: Nanofood

Nanotechnology in food

Nanotechnology is the science of manipulating matter at near atomic scales to create new processes, materials and devices. A food is a nanofood when nanoparticles, nanotechnology techniques or tools are used during cultivation, production, processing or packaging of the food. The European Parliament has always supported consumers’ right to know what is in the food they buy, which MEPs believe should also cover nanomaterials. For this reason we have chosen “nanofood” as our Term of the Week. During this week’s plenary session the European Parliament voted on a text regarding the provision of food information to consumers and in particular the definition of “engineered nanomaterials”.  Find out more about this topic with this article and with this nutrition glossary.
