The Spanish Organisation for Medical Translation and Terminology « Tremédica » invited TermCoord to participate in the Xth biannual edition of its international conference (“Jornadas”) hosted this year by the University of Vigo and AGPTI from the 3rd to the 5th April 2014. Some 150 participants attended a presentation on terminology management, communication and resources offered by the European Union’s Institutions focused on the fields of their interest, followed by the demonstration of tools used by TermCoord to monitor terminology on the web, especially adapted to the medical terminology research and metasearch (access here the presentation and the programme).

The participants showed high interest for the interactive feeding and inter-institutional cooperation for the management of IATE that they praised as one of the most used and appreciated databases for their translations and terminological research. DocHound and especially the GlossaryLinks have also attracted a high level of interest and a significant input of specialized glossaries will enrich this tool by the occasion of this contact of TermCoord with the professional and academic world of biomedical translation.

Of particular interest for TermCoord was the President of Tremédica, Prof.  Bertha Gutiérrez Rodilla’s presentation on the history of medical terminology and translation and the most important and reliable lexical and terminological multilingual resources. Professor Rodilla’s combined experience and studies as a surgeon and linguist give her a unique authority in this subject area. Also interesting for TermCoord  was the presentation by Xusto Rodriguez Rio of BuSCatermos, a database in Galician, created by the Institute for the Standardisation of Galician (USC), but containing the equivalent terms and permitting research also in Spanish, English and French. Outside the terminological interest of this database, this initiative shows the “glocal” dimension of terminology that produces precious multilingual resources starting also from work focused primarily on the promotion of non-official European languages.

In discussions with Prof. Elena Trigo, director of the language department and Salustiano Mato, Rector of the University of Vigo, the possibilities of cooperation on an IATE project have been evoked but also for the eventual recognition as Masters’ theses of the creation of entire glossaries in a specific domain using the IATE template.
