Today, the term of the week is based on a Luxembourgish cultural event called Schueberfouer,  which is the big funfair taking place every year from the end of August till the second week of September in Luxembourg city, at Glacis (Limpertsberg). The traditional starting date is one or two days before St Bartholomew’s day, 24 August. This year the Schuberfouer opens today, on 22 August.

“For nearly 450 years, until the French Revolution, the Schueberfouer was in first place a huge market, joined by an animal market called ‘Bartholomew’s market’.” Its name originates from the place where the market was first held, the Schuedburg (todayHoly Ghost Plateau). Later the name evolved to Schuedbuerg, Schuedmiss and finally to Schuebermëss. John the Blind, King of Bohemia and Count of Luxembourg, created the Schueberfouer on 20 October 1340. Back in the days it was a huge market for food, livestock, cloths and pottery among others.

You cannot miss the chance to see all the attractions and the Fouershop. And you have to absolutely eat the typical Luxembourgish “Gromperekichelcher”, the “gebakene Fësch” or the famous waffles with whipped cream and strawberries.

Note: It is open every day from 2 p.m to 1 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays until 2 a.m.
