SDL Public Sector Forum

2472

On 15 October SDL organised its 5th annual Public Sector Forum in Hotel Royal in Luxembourg in which is European and public sector institutions are represented. The Forum addresses challenges around growing multilingual communication, under human capacity constraints and associated costs through best practices and innovations in translation production, automated translation, review management and externalization of translations. It furthermore highlights efficiencies gained when moving from unstructured to structured content.

In this Forum the European Parliament was represented twice: On the one hand by TermCoord (Terminology Coordination Unit) which was represented by Rodolfo Maslias, Head of TermCoord and Ciprian Dumea, translator, trainer and terminologist in the Romanian unit. Rodolfo Maslias held a presentation about Integrating IATE in Studio – the EP perspective in which he described how the European Parliament wants to integrate IATE into Studio and in the translation workflow in order to ensure that IATE terminology can be used and enriched interactively during the translation process. On the other hand, Parliament had two notable presentations by DAS (Development of Applications and IT systems Unit), which was represented by Pascale Chartiers-Brun, Head of DAS, who spoke about “Automation of quality control”, and by Pedro Garcia-Dieguez, Project Manager at DAS, who spoke about “Customisations of SDL Trados Studio at the European Parliament”.

Apart from an Engineering Workshop and a Deep Dive into SDL DSK & API, primarily targeted at IT specialists with specific knowledge in the domain, there were also many other interesting presentations on the agenda both from other institutions using Studio solutions, like the presentation about the “Translation Automation with Sirus”, the in-house tool of the Joint Translation Services of the EESC and CoR that automates many steps in the CAT workflow, or the presentation about machine translation entitled “Using MT@EC from SDL Trados Studio” describing the current and future interface between MT@EC and the translator workplace with SDL Trados Studio in the Commission, and from SDL representatives who talked about diverse topics like SDL Multiterm Workflow by Kaleidoscope, product road updates, ways to extend and customise SDL’s platform, dynamic translation workflow management, notable SDL Studio plugins and machine translation post-editing.

Finally the Forum provided the users the possibility not only to voice public sector specific requirements but also to vote on them thus establishing a weighted product wish list for SDL which can help them in prioritising the enhancement requests.
