paulina-picture-2Our former trainee Paulina Lewandowska, ECQA Terminology Manager, gave two presentations in Poland recently: at the tekom Roadshow Conference in Warsaw and at soap! – the conference for technical communication in Krakow.

The social role of terminology – practical examples of terminology management in companies

Clear and consistent communication in a business organisation, B2C and B2B relations is possible only by implementing and keeping terminology up-to-date. The wording and language used are of key importance from a strategic, competitive and quality assurance point of view, and influence the customers` behaviour and support the brand, its products and services on national and international level. Terminology also has an impact on the localization process of exported products. Consistent language is also a preventive solution that can protect businesses against legal liability. The aim of the presentation is to define what exactly the terms “terminology” and “terminology work” mean and what impact the wording and language used by companies have on consumers. The presentation also addresses the importance of consistency in technical documentation and source texts that are to be translated.

Paulina works at Interlingua Language Services – ILS GmbH as a translator and terminology manager. She also holds workshops about CAT-tools for students and translators. Since 2012 she is an ECQA terminology manager. In 2014 she was selected for a training placement at TermCoord. She is in her last semester of master studies in translation at the University of Vienna with the language combination Polish, German and Chinese. She is currently writing her master thesis about terminology management for companies. Fellow of tekom Europe and UNIVERSITAS.
