escracheDo you know what an escrache is? Can you maybe guess the two words involved in the term austericidio? Did you know that while you tweet, Spaniards tuit? Or have you read the word guasap and, after decoding the spelling, you have felt the unstoppable need to tell everyone… via Whatsapp?

The Spanish translators in the European Union have launched the contest Palabro del año 2014, which intends to find the weirdest newly coined words in Spanish. The previous two editions showed that technology is one of the main sources for these kind of terms, and also that the crisis is not only affecting the economy, but also our vocabulary.

Submit your proposals before January 15. The winners will be awarded with the book En pocas palabras. Apuntes de un trujamán, by Salvador Peña Martín. You can find all the information here.

Good luck!
