Not one person can deny that nowadays terminology has become a key issue in multilingual, scientific and technical communication. But even if it seems to be equally present in social sciences, its contribution in the field is often underestimated and not very considered. This is why the University of Luxembourg, in collaboration with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, is going to hold a presentation called “Terminology in social sciences: the case of an IATE project on migration“.

Organised by the Institute for Research on Multilingualism (MLing), the presentation will be held on November 17, 2015 at Campus Belval, University of Luxembourg, from 17.00 to 18.30pm (MSA – room 4,010). The aim of the presentation will be, of course, to investigate the place of terminology in social sciences. To do so, Dr. Elpida Loupaki (Assistant Professor in Descriptive Translation Studies & Terminology at the Aristotle University) will introduce the IATE project on migration that she undertook in cooperation with the Terminology Coordination unit of the European Parliament.

thessaloniki-for-iateThe Aristotle University’s IATE project on migration was carried out by the Master students of the Inter-Faculty Postgraduate Program in Translation, with the aim to initiate them to terminology work and also to contribute to the IATE term-base with some well-documented and reliable terms. Members of the team had to provide a solid definition and context for each term in both English and Greek language; consequently, TermCoord offered a number of textual resources as well as access to internal IATE. The final results were discussed with experts in the field of migration laws and social anthropology.

External experts who contributed to the project were Konstantions Tsitselikis, Associate Professor of the University of Macedonia (Thessaloniki), and Eleni Sideri, Adjunct of the International Hellenic University.
