IATE entries to TEPA Term Bank

2063

The Finnish Terminology Centre TSK has maintained TEPA Term Bank since 1984. After a few years of in-house use the term bank was opened to paying customers, and since 1997 it has been available free-of-charge to all users via TSK’s web site. Both TEPA’s content and user interface have been renewed during the past years, and this autumn it was decided that new resources will be added to the term bank. This increases the amount of searchable data remarkably. One new resource is such a part of IATE term base that includes Finnish term equivalents and another resource is a part of the Bank of Finnish Terminology in Arts and Sciences. More information about the contents of TEPA can be found via the Content link on the start page of the term bank.

More material was added to TEPA Term Bank, because we wanted to make the information search easier: now it is possible to get results from even more sources than before. Also the use of information is easier, because all the search results are presented in the same TEPA format instead of the original formats which differ from each other.

When Finland became a member of the European Union in 1995, the membership increased the need for terminology work in Finnish. During 1995–2002 the Terminology Centre and its subcontractors added more than 100 000 Finnish equivalents into the Eurodicautom term bank. The subject fields included e.g. agriculture and fishing, food industry, economy and business, statistics, mechanical and electrical engineering, environment and environmental protection, civil defence, insurance, textiles, and social welfare.

Nowadays Eurodicautom is a part of the EU’s IATE terminology database, the material has been updated and lots of new entries have been added to IATE. Since part of IATE is published as open data, it now became possible for the Finnish Terminology Centre TSK to publish IATE’s data also through TEPA Term Bank. Since the entries shown in TEPA represent only part of the information given in IATE (terms, classification and  reliability value are shown in TEPA), every TEPA entry includes a link to the full IATE entry so it is easy to check what additional information IATE offers.

We hope that adding IATE entries into TEPA complements IATE’s own search interface and helps users to find and compare information from IATE and other TEPA sources. You can use TEPA Term Bank at http://www.tsk.fi/tepa/netmot.exe?UI=engr – please send us feedback by e-mail to tsk@tsk.fi.
