Today (November 25th), we all raise our voices for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. A terribly sad date marked on our calendars under the premise reminding us that we must put an end to this global phenomenon as soon as possible.Stop gender violence

Gender-related killing of women and girls is criminalized in some countries as ‘femicide‘ or ‘feminicide‘ and is part of national legislation. In TermCoord we have already talked about this term in detail so today we will highlight a related term: Feminism.

Feminism is often confused with misandry and this is a misnomer. According to the Oxford Dictionary, Feminism is the advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes. Therefore it is far from hating men – feminists just is just request gender equality and human rights for women. They believe that all people are entitled to the same civil rights and liberties and can be intellectually equal regardless of their gender.

What’s the link between feminism and violence against women?

As an utmost importance, society should be made aware of the equal rights of men and women. While some national governments have adopted a wide variety of measures to address gender-violence, including legal reforms, public education campaigns, and funding for shelters and rape crisis centres, other governments have done little to face this problem. Here is where feminism comes into play: a society aware of gender inequality can promote a more equal social system, demanding comprehensive policies particularly with regard to gender related violence.

Therefore feminism is not a kind of sexism but a cry for equality and this should start with women not having to fear violence.
