IATE Term of the Week: green infrastructure

1548

One of the topics that has been discussed during the European Parliament plenary session of 13-16 February 2017 was tackling climate change and trying to find more ecological alternatives. For this reason,  ‘green infrastructure‘ is our choice for the new IATE Term of the week.

green-infrastructure-city-europeHave you ever heard about it? Briefly, a green infrastructure is a network of healthy ecosystems which often provides cost-effective alternatives to traditional ‘grey’ infrastructure and offers many other benefits for both EU citizens and biodiversity, as defined by the European Commission. Developing green infrastructure is a key step regarding the EU 2020 Biodiversity Strategy.

In practice, a green infrastructure is a strategically planned network of natural and semi-natural areas, along with other environmental features meant to provide a range of ecosystem services, such as water purification, air quality and climate mitigation. This network of green (land) and blue (water) spaces may improve the environmental conditions and thus citizens’ health and quality of life.

To promote this, the EU developed a strategy for adaptation to climate change that was adopted in 2013. The aim is to facilitate greater coordination between Member States and to ensure that the decisions are taken into account in all the pertinent EU policies.

On top of this, there is another strategy developed by the European Commission: the Green Infrastructure Strategy. The main objective is to ensure that the protection, restoration, creation and enhancement of green infrastructure become a key part of planning and territorial development, provided that it offers a better alternative to conventional grey choices.
