IATE Term of the Week: Cyber Hygiene

The Estonian Presidency of the Council of the European Union takes the lead in EU digital revolution by having oganized the Tallinn Digital Summit on 29 September 2017. The event brought EU heads of state and government to focus on digital protection for citizens as one of the challenges of globalization. “For citizens the most important thing they have to understand is cyber hygiene,” said Klaid Magi of Estonia’s Information System Authority as reported by Euronews (2017). In accordance with the statement, the term cyber hygiene is chosen as IATE Term of the Week.

„The online Collins English Online Dictionary defines the term cyber hygiene as “steps that computer users can take to improve their cyber security and better protect themselves online”.

ENISA (2016) viewed cyber hygiene “in the same manner as personal hygiene and, once properly integrated into an organisation will be simple daily routines, good behaviours and occasional check ups to make sure the organisations online health is in optimum condition”.

IATE term of cyber hygieneAs reported by the UK Government’s National Cyber Security Centre, “around 80% of cyber attacks were caused by poor cyber practices within the organisational and individual victims” (GOV.UK: 2015).  Emphasizing the implementation of public cyber hygiene will result in regular impact on cyber security and minimize the risks of being hacked.
