1659

The Plenary Week is happening in Strasbourg from Monday 15th, calling Members of the European Parliament to France from all their home countries for the first public EU session of 2018. For this edition of IATE Term of the Week, we have chosen one of the topics featured in the EP’s agenda which will be discussed on Thursday 18th:  Youth Employment Initiative.

What it is

The Youth Employment Initiative (YEI) is a financial project of the EU which relates to the employment status of teenagers and young people; the main EU financial resources have a crucial role in this initiative, as they are involved in supporting the implementation of Youth Guarantee schemes. The Youth Guarantee is a commitment signed by all Member States, and it aims to ensure that all young people under the age of 25 receive good quality employment, education and traineeship opportunities.

Who is involved

In some European regions, youth unemployment was higher than 25% in 2012: it is in those regions that the YEI was initially launched, in order to provide support to young people living there.
The Youth Employment Initiative does not arbitrarily go to young EU citizens who are in search of a job; on the contrary, it is specifically intended for young people who are not in education, and currently without employment or training (often defined with the acronym NEETs). This definition includes long-term unemployed or those not registered as job-seekers. It ensures that in parts of Europe where the challenges are most daunting, young people can receive targeted support.

The YEI in numbers

The Youth Employment Initiative budget for the period 2014-2020 is €8.8 billion, and targets all eligible Member States.
Looking back at the success of the Youth Guarantee project, since January 2014 over 16 million young people have entered its schemes, and about 10 million young people have taken up an offer.

The YEI in IATE

The definition provided by IATE for Youth Employment Guarantee is new initiative making available funds from the EU budget for the period 2014-2020 to help regions with youth unemployment rates above 25% to implement measures promoting youth employment, in particular the Youth Guarantee“. Our terminology database provides a full entry for the term, meaning that all 24 official EU languages are covered.
