New terminological theses added to TermCoord

The latest additions are two interesting dissertations from the most recent trainees to join the Terminology Coordination Unit. Alina Busila’s thesis focused on the field of legal terminology and compared English, Romanian and Polish. This, together with a closer look at the Legal Terminology Innovations in the Republic of Moldova, of which the author is a national. This master thesis represents a contrastive analysis of legal English, Romanian and Polish terminology used in the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights. The research is an ambitious one because it covers the phenomenon of legal terminology within Romanian, English and Polish legal systems; the shifts of terms within the legal field and legal systems; the etymology of legal terms; the need for standardization of legal terms; equivalence or incongruity of legal terms; legal terminologization, determinologization and reterminologization; and, of course, the techniques of rendering legal terms. It also approaches the new terminological acquisitions in the Moldovan law as of 2011.

On the other hand, Spanish trainee María Isabel Bolívar Perez, focused more on medical terminology, more specifically, the terminology used in television series related to medicine.

For medical TV series to be believable, they need to use the appropriate medical terminology. Translating medical terminology is challenging even for experienced translators. And taking into account how easy it is today to share audiovisual materials via Internet, many amateur translators are now tackling the translation of these shows. So how do they deal with such a complex matter?

As a medical translator with several years of experience, María Isabel Bolívar Pérez pondered the aforementioned questions. So she proposed a study on the matter that would serve as her master’s thesis dissertation.

Both these theses that have been recently uploaded to the online database for terminology related theses, together with many more, can be found on TermCoord’s website, here.
