IATE term of the week: Cybersecurity

IATE Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting systems, networks, and programs from digital attacks.

In an increasingly digitized world where data resides in cloud systems of mobile phones and IoT devices threat vectors are multiplying, threatening the operations of firms and institutions, customer and bank details, their future financial stability and the delivery of essential services, or  even sensitive information of states.  Cyberspace and its underlying infrastructure are consequently left vulnerable to a range of risk stemming from both physical and cyber threats.

However Cyberspace is particularly difficult to secure due to numerous factors: the ability of malicious actors to operate from anywhere in the world, the linkages between cyberspace and physical systems, and the difficulty of reducing vulnerabilities and consequences in complex cyber networks.

Critical infrastructures in particular, increasingly subject to sophisticated cyber intrusions, constitutes a great concern in terms of cyber threats. As information technology becomes increasingly integrated with physical infrastructure operations, the risk of wide-scale events that could cause harm or disrupt services and devices’ operations upon which the economy and the daily lives of millions of European citizens depends, is more than ubiquitous.

In light of the risk and potential consequences of cyber events, a new certification framework for connected devices, together with a stronger role for the EU Cybersecurity Agency, were backed by the Members of the Industry Committee of the European Parliament on Tuesday, 10/07/2019.

Today’s vote is a very important step towards a long-term vision of cybersecurity in the EU for two reasons. Firstly, from the perspective of consumers, it is important that users have trust and confidence in IT solutions. Secondly, I strongly believe that Europe can become a leading player in cybersecurity. We have a strong industrial base and it is vital to continue working on improving cybersecurity for consumer goods, industrial applications and critical infrastructure.” says Angelika Niebler (EPP, DE).
