Termcoord European election Countdown: European Environment Agency

The European Environment Agency (EEA) was established in 1990 and is an EU agency. Its members, however, do not only include all EU countries but also Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Turkey, and Switzerland. Six more European countries have applied for membership and are cooperating with the EEA.

The mission of this agency is to help improve Europe’s environment by providing relevant, independent, and reliable information to policymakers and the public. It supports the EU in making informed decisions about how to deal with environmental issues and how to become more sustainable. It aims to play a major part in establishing knowledge-sharing and capacity-building.

The EEA is developing and coordinating Eionet (European Environment Information and Observation Network), a partnership network of the EEA and its member and cooperating countries. This coordination includes national focal points (NFPs), based in national environment agencies and environment ministries. It also involves experts from national institutions and other bodies working with environmental information in form of national reference centres (NRCs).

The main stakeholders of the EEA are the European Parliament, European Commission, the Council of the European Union, and other EU institutions. Other clients are national governments, NGOs, scientific and academic communities and business organisations. One very important audience is the public. The EEA works towards giving access to environmental knowledge, for example, on their website or through videos like the one below, to help citizens gain information about climate change and environmental issues. If you are interested to learn more about the European environment Agency, check out their brochure.

The EEA is not the only thing the EU does to improve the environment. It supports environmentalists at a local level and environmental NGOs, but also tackles the issue of single-use plastic products. Learn more about what Europe does for you at what-europe-does-for-me.eu.
