Rute Costa: Terminological definitions and their sources (4 December 2014)

Description and programme:

Introduction to terminological definitions.
Translation-oriented terminology databases, like IATE, need particular kinds of definitions in order to help translators understand well the concepts described.

Terminologists need to be able to find and assess potential definitions available in different sources. Since very often it is extremely difficult or even impossible to find proper definitions for the above-mentioned purposes, terminologists have also to be able to prepare their own definitions relying on information found in their researches.

The programme will include both relevant theory and applications, including such topics as the linguistic dimension of terminology, terms, collocations and term candidates, specialised corpora, extraction of terminological date from corpora, analysis of texts for the editing of definitions and mediation between terminologists and experts for the validation of terms, concepts and definitions.
