Every week TermCoord selects a new term from the European Terminology Databank “IATE”, which is related to relevant political and international issues occurring during the week.

This week we have selected the term “magnitude” with reference to the earthquake which struck in Italy this week. (Read article on BBC News)

Definition: a rating of a given earthquake independent of the place of observation; it is calculated from measurements on seismographs and it is properly expressed in ordinary numbers and decimals based on a logarithmic scale.
