This week’s Wednesday Video Fix is a presentation given by John McWhorter on the influence of texting on language. In this video, he suggests that, contrary to general belief, texting does not threaten language but is a language in its own right, with its own structure and evolution.

John McWhorter is an American linguist and political commentator. He is the author of a number of books including: Towards a Model of Creole Genesis, Word on the Street: Debunking the Myth of the “Pure” Standard English, Language Interrupted: Signs of Non-Native Acquisition in Standard Language Grammars or What Language Is.

He is also a contributing editor for the New Republic, TheRoot.com, the New York Daily News and the Daily.

His research mainly focuses on Creole and Black American identities and language.
