Next Monday the European Parliament is holding a public hearing on the universal right to clean water, the first EP hearing under the European Citizens’ Initiative.

For this reason, we have chosen “Citizens’ Initiative” as our IATE Term of the Week. The European Citizens’ Initiative aims to increase direct democracy in the European Union. It was introduced by the Lisbon Treaty and gives EU citizens an opportunity to help shape the EU agenda. To qualify, a Citizens’ Initiative must be signed by at least one million EU citizens, from at least seven of the 28 member states, within 12 months of the registration date.
