Holland or the Netherlands?

NetherlandsThere has long been confusion in the English language over what to call the small country above Belgium and the people that live there. In days gone by, the venerable nation was known as Holland, after the major provinces North and South Holland.

But in time the name was changed to the Netherlands or Lower lands, to reflect the country’s position on the lower Rhine.
