IATE term of the Week – femicide

2057

FemicideFemicide is the misogynist killing of women by men. While the issues of date rape and sexual harassment have finally entered into mainstream discourse, femicide, the most brutal form of sexist behaviour, has yet to be widely acknowledged and understood.

For more information, check out the European Parliament resolution of 8 October 2013 on Gendercide: the missing women?

More information is also available in the book Femicide: The Politics of Woman Killing and the article Féminicides, meurtres sexistes et violences de genre, pas qu’une question de terminologie!

We invite you to suggest the equivalent terms in the missing EU languages, or alternatives to the existing term in your language if you consider the proposed term inaccurate. Provide your answer with a reliable reference and an accurate definition and/or context if possible.

A terminologist for the language in question will revise your answer and decide whether to validate them. Given the implications of the process, a delay is to be expected.
