Second ballot

1619

The Polish head of state will be elected on 24th May for a five-year term as no candidate obtained the required more than 50% of the votes to take the post. According to Polish law, the two candidates who received the biggest numbers of votes during the presidential election will compete in the second round. Due to this event, TermCoord decided to choose “second ballot” as the IATE term of the week.

By choosing this term, we also want to encourage translators to make a contribution to IATE and propose the equivalents in other languages.
Contribute to IATE! A terminologist for the respective language will revise your answer and decide whether to validate them. Given the implications of the process, a delay is to be expected.

Your voice is important
It is a really sad fact that the turnout was the lowest (only about 49% of Poles decided to vote!) in the whole history of Poland. Surprisingly, the gap between the two most successful candidates was also barely visible as it was only about 1%. The second ballot in Poland is scheduled for 24th May and the polls will be open between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. on this Sunday. The Embassy of the Republic of Poland reminds Polish expatriates that they have the same right to vote as the citizens in the country, but they need to register first to be able to elect the President abroad. Notice that the voting registration can be done at every embassy of the Republic of Poland. The easiest, fastest and recommended way is to fill in the electronic application here:

You can also send an email, fax, phone or just go to the embassy to ask for registration for voting in the presidential election. After that you will receive the confirmation, and the only thing you need to bring with you is an ID card or passport to be able to vote at the Embassy of the Republic of Poland during the second round.

Notice that the deadline for registration is 21st May (Thursday) for those voting in person!
