IATE Term of the Week: Student mobility

1351

student-mobility-erasmus-europeAs we said in an earlier Video Fix post, the Erasmus Programme is celebrating its 30-year anniversary this week. This student exchange programme was launched in 1987 and its purpose was to provide foreign exchange options for students within the Member States of the European Union and beyond. Over these years, the schedule has evolved to what we know today as Erasmus+, which combines all the EU’s current schemes for education, training, youth and sport.

The Erasmus Programme has turned out to be one of the most successful projects that the European Union has ever created. It has proved to be the result of putting theory into practice, by making it possible to develop and execute what the founders of the EU only could dream about. It fosters mobility, cooperation, diversity and a closer union among young people from different backgrounds, who come back home feeling that they live in a borderless world.

Having said that, our IATE Term of the Week could be no other than student mobility. According to the definition provided by the IATE data base, the generic meaning of the term refers to any academic mobility which takes place within a student’s program of study in post-secondary education; and the length of it can range from a semester to the full program of study.

We would also like to take this opportunity to say that TermCoord offers the possibility of hosting study visits and Erasmus Staff, which will enable you to get to know the Unit’s activity as well as receive training in terminology and of course, to move around and experience another culture.

A terminologist for the respective language will revise your answer and decide whether to validate them. Given the implications of the process, a delay is to be expected.
