IATE Term of the Week: Wildlife trafficking

1455

On the 2nd of March, the European Parliament announced some recommendations on how to use EU’s trade tools in order to fight against wildlife trafficking which is a crime and at the same time a big business. According to the WWF it is run by dangerous international networks, wildlife and animal parts are trafficked much like illegal drugs and arms. Today is the World Wildlife Day established by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). This is why we have decided that the IATE Term of the week is wildlife trafficking.

Wildlife trafficking - IATE Term of the Week

In order to protect nature against wildlife trafficking the EU wants to improve the use of their own legal framework. This is why they decided to follow some established points according to the plenary session of the European Parliament:

  • providing more help to third country customs authorities with capacity building, training and information;
  • making sufficient resources available for combating such crimes in the EU;
  • ensuring the private sector’s involvement, including the engagement of online marketplaces, express delivery services and social media and remedying vulnerabilities in transportation and customs procedures;
  • using the EU’s common commercial policy to promote binding corporate social responsibility standards;
  • including anti-corruption provisions in all EU future free trade agreements, given that bribery is a key enabler of illegal trade;
  • using the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement, which includes a detailed trade and sustainable development chapter, as an example for future trade agreements;
  • exploring how global trade and environmental regimes (e.g. World Trade Organisation and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) can better support each other.

Wildlife trafficking is defined as illegal cross-border trade in wild fauna and flora according to IATE. The following screenshot shows wildlife trafficking entry in IATE:

A terminologist for the respective language will revise your answer and decide whether to validate them. Given the implications of the process, a delay is to be expected.

As you can see there are several missing languages, so maybe you could be the next one to help us improving IATE with a proposal in your mother tongue?
