Schuman trainees working at the Communication Department of the TermCoord Unit Doris Fernandes and Katerina Palamioti were invited by the DG TRAD Translation Traineeships group to join the information visit to the Translation Centre for the Bodies of the European Union (also known as the CdT) on Wednesday, 8th of March, 2017.

The visit included a set of valuable presentations providing an overview of the organisation and cooperation of the different divisions of the CdT, delivered by Ms Jogita Logina (Head of the Translation Section), Ms Virginie Zignale (Translation Department), Mr Nuno Sousa and Ms Marina Kourkoula (Demand Management Section), and Mr Giuseppe Forte (Translation Support Department). Translation and Schuman trainees had the chance to listen to a brief presentation of the CdT’s history, mission and activities, such as translation, revision, editing, terminology management, web localisation and subtitling.

Information on types of clients and projects, as well as on the main translation languages, was provided. Attendees also had the chance to learn what is the translation workflow at the CdT, i.e. which steps need to be followed to pre-process, translate, correct and finalise a translation job  and what are the main file formats and CAT tools used, both with regard to in-house and external freelance translators. A special presentation was given on the Language and Techonology Support Section, which gave visitors an insight into what are the language and IT support services provided to translators who work for the CdT, especially in relation to the treatment of file formats and resources for translation. All this information was extremely valuable for young translators since many of them wish to pursue a career at the European institutions, and so was the information on career opportunities and tendering procedures to become part of the CdT as external translators experts in the domain.
