IATE Term of the Week: EU-U.S. Privacy Shield

MEPs recently expressed their concerns about the new rules allowing the US National Security Agency (NSA) to collect and share private data for commercial purposes without court orders, warrant or congressional authorisation also within the EU. The 6th April the Parliament adopted a resolution to ensure adequate personal data protection in compliance with the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and with the new EU data protection rules. For this reason, the IATE Term of the Week is EU-U.S. Privacy Shield.
EU Priivacy Shield

As stated in the Guide to the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield of the European Commission,

The Privacy Shield allows your personal data to be transferred from the EU to a company in the United States, provided that the company there processes (e.g. uses, stores and further transfers) your personal data according to a strong set of data protection rules and safeguards. The protection given to your data applies regardless of whether you are an EU citizen or not.

The Privacy Shield framework replaces the Safe Harbour Privacy Principles issued by the US Department of Commerce on July 21, 2000 and invalidated by the EU Court of Justice in 6th October 2015.
