The Babel Party is an event organised by the Directorate-General for Translation of the European Parliament every year. This year’s edition was celebrated on Tuesday 16th of June (2017) and the Terminology Coordination Unit took the occasion to present the I·ATE (Food Term of the Week) project.

Food is usually an excellent ambassador and so it is believed in the Directorate-General for Translation of the European Parliament, one of the biggest and more diverse DGs of the EP. Every year they host the Babel Party, a colourfoul event where all DGTRAD staff (translators from the different Language Units, admin staff and terminologists, together with trainees) get together to celebrate diversity by preparing stands with food from different European countries.

Food is cultureTermCoord decided this year to contribute with sweet dishes and desserts prepared by all members of staff and trainees coming from different countries of Europe. The team took this wonderful opportunity to present the I·ATE Food Term project. I·ATE is an interactive multilingual glossary on culinary terms that allows the sharing of common knowledge, discovering and preserving related concepts across Europe. In the framework of this project, every Saturday the TermCoord team chooses and posts about a Food term of the Week, which is usually not one single term but one culinary concept (dish, dessert, ingredient, etc.) that is shared by different European and non-European cuisines. The post usually contains a description of the dish and/or recipe, the relevant cultural context description (seasons, social or religious events, etc. when the dish is usually prepared) and the different denominations it receives in each of the countries it is present.

The goal of the I·ATE project is to preserve this common language, cultural and culinary heritage through the compendium and visibilisation of what unites our kitchens and palates, but also our societies and cultures. Below you can see some pictures of the Babel Party 2017 and we challenge you to guess what where the names of TermCoord’s delicious contributions!
