On 25 and 26 November, the European Association for Terminology biennial Summit took place in Dublin and provided a series of interesting talks on this year’s topic “Terminology in Challenging Circumstance”.
The European Association for Terminology (EAFT) was founded on 1996, in Denmark, with the aim of bringing together persons or organisations who are active in or have an interest in the discipline of terminology. The EAFT is nowadays the result of several “Proposals for an Operational Infrastructure for Terminology in Europe” and was co-funded by the European Institutions as part of the Multilingual Action Plan programme.
Thus, for several years now, the EAFT has been organising exchange events on the main topic of terminology, every time with a different perspective and approach. Let’s recall the EAFT Summit 2016: the event, organised in cooperation with TermCoord and held in DG-Trad, Luxembourg, celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Association by discussing terminology through the theme “Vision & Revision”, in order to both retrace the history and look at the future of this discipline.
In 2021, the Terminology Coordination Unit of the European Parliament participated once again in the Summit. In the second section of this two-day conference, TermCoord, represented by Rodolfo Maslias and Angelica Marino, took part in the Summit in order to present its current activities related to the cooperation with Universities all over the world, in the framework of the project “Terminology without Borders”. This project was born few years ago with the ambition to foster fruitful bonds between TermCoord and universities worldwide, to provide terminological material for educational purposes and eventually to feed the European Inter-institutional Terminology Database IATE with new entries, carefully revised by in-house linguistic-terminologists.
During this two-day conference, chaired by Henrik Nilsson, terminologist at the Swedish Centre for Terminology, the participants provided some insights into a range of experiences: from terminology management in private companies, with Sarah Cogan, to national terminology organisations, with Lia Karosanizde; from terminological landscape related to ISO 12616:1 with Barbara Inge Karsch, owner of BIK Terminology, to some brand-new terminology management system (TMS) solutions, such as the new open source Terminologue system (from Dublin City University) or FAIRTerm Application (from University of Padoua)… and many others! Originally from Rome, Italy, in 2015 Angelica moved in France and attended the Sorbonne University for a Bachelor’s Degree in Foreign Literatures and Languages, then pursued her studies in Paris, at the ISIT University, for a Master’s Degree in Intercultural Translation and Communication. Besides, she holds a Double Master’s Degree in Language Industry and Specialized Translation from the Paris Diderot University and is preparing a Web Design and Digital Creation Master’s Certification. During her Master’s studies, she participated in two sub-projects for the Terminology without Borders project, with two assignments focused on culture (CULT platform) and intercultural education (EDU platform). She also put into use her linguistic and digital skills through two traineeships as Translator, Interpreter and multilingual Webmistress, and worked as Subtitle Translator for the pro-Europe think thank EuroCité.
