FEM Projects: International Women’s Day

1078

The International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrated annually on 8th of March since 1975, commemorates the cultural, political and socioeconomic achievements of women. It aims at honoring the achievements of women and promoting women’s rights, especially suffrage, gender equality, equal opportunities, right to education and right to own property, among many others.

After the 2020 and 2021 pivotal themes of the IWD, “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights” and “Orange the World: End Violence against Women Now!”, respectively, this year the main focus of the International Women’s Day lies on “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”. The idea behind the IWD has always been to foster a world free of bias and stereotypes, to fight discrimination against women, and to call out gendered actions or assumptions, but this year the IWD’s crucial theme strives to acknowledge the contribution of women and girls involved worldwide in sustainability actions who are tackling climate change-related issues.

Among the several topics that the Terminology Coordination Unit of the European Parliament is dealing with, one section is dedicated to Women’s Right terminology. The FEM projects encompass specialized terminology related to Gender Violence, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), Gender Gap, Gender-based discrimination, Pay equity, Reproductive rights, and many more.

These terminology records cover English, Italian, Greek, Romanian and Russian and recently new entries were also added in French and Spanish thanks to the collaboration between TermCoord and the University of Naples “Parthenope” in the framework of the Terminology without Borders initiative, thus enriching FEM project’s language combinations range.
