For the past few years, TermCoord has been very honoured to cooperate with the University of Padua in Italy in the framework of the Terminology without Borders initiative and, more specifically, with Professor Federica Vezzani. We are now happy to present her latest work: last month, she published her very first book titled “Terminologie numérique: conception, représentation et gestion” in French. It could be translated  as “Digital Terminology: conception, representation and management” in English. The book focuses on a multidisciplinary approach on terminology in the era of massive digitalization.

Federica Vezzani is an assistant professor for French language and translation at the Department of Linguistics and Literary Studies of the University of Padua. Her PhD was on terminology, terminography and specialized translation. Her book integrates part of her previous studies and focuses on the use of digital tools in the terminology field, which became an essential element not only in terminology but more widely in the translation field as well. She starts her reflexion on a historical explanation of what the term “digital” means exactly and how we can adapt the terminology work to it. The creation of terminology resources is, without a doubt, one of the main tasks for terminologists. The glossaries are now fully digitalised and all terminology work is done digitally.

Federica Vezzani has engaged herself in the digitalization of terminology with the creation of the FAIRterm application. This acronym stands for: Facile à Trouver, Accessibles, Intéropérables, Réutilisables in French. We could translate it as: Easy to Find, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable in English. The FAIR programme respects the three following ISO norms:

-ISO-16642: 2017 – digital application in terminology

-ISO-12620: 2019 – management of the terminological resources (specificities of the data categorization)

-ISO-30042: 2019 – management of the terminological resources (TermBase exchange – TBX)

In this context, TermCoord had the honour to welcome her and and her colleague Giorgio Maria Di Nunzio in Luxembourg on the 19th and 20th of May, 2022. They hosted the workshop of the FAIRterm Web Application in an online presentation, attended by more than 50 people. If you want to know more about the FAIRterm application workshop, you can click here.

Federica Vezzani also studies the linguistic behaviour of the specialized terms and vocabulary in the medical field. During her PhD, she created the TriMED platform . This platform can be useful for anyone with medical interests such as patients, doctors or medical translators.

Federica Vezzani’s publication intends to collect all terminology and translation theories, applied to the terminology work for digitalization. Her approach is innovative and opens new doors for the future of translation and terminology because she takes all of the new challenges into consideration. In this sense, her book is an essential tool that can be used by all terminologists. She also opens her research to critical thinking by looking at the subject from all angles, always applying it to digital transformation in the framework of translation.
