For thousands of years, Jews have been living in Europe. Their presence in some countries like Spain led to the development of a new local language variety mixing their languages with the local languages. This is how Judeo-Spanish – also called Ladino – was born.

Since Sephardi Jews were forced to leave Spain in 1492 and spread all over Europe and beyond, this language is losing its speakers. Nevertheless there are initiatives being taken to recognize and preserve this language.
