What is I·ATE?
I·ATE is a new terminology resource to promote gastronomy as an essential part of our European heritage and education.
I·ATE is an interactive multilingual glossary on culinary terms that allows the sharing of common knowledge, discovering and preserving related concepts across Europe.
We live in a blossoming age of gastronomy, and the EU is strongly committed to preserving and promoting European know-how in food production. With this aim it has implemented policies on food quality and established quality schemes such as Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) and Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (TSG). Moreover, the European Parliament has recently adopted a Report on the European Gastronomic Heritage that calls upon the Commission and EU countries to further include European gastronomic heritage in culture-related initiatives and policies.
TermCoord wants to become involved in this challenge and believes that a linguistic consciousness is necessary to promote the high quality EU food that is linked to its local traditions and different landscapes. It is essential to raise the awareness and knowledge of citizens on food in the EU to boost production and attract interest on an international level.
Terminology plays a role in the investigation and preservation of concepts. It helps therefore, to promote terms especially through related professions such as translation, technical writing and communication.
How does I·ATE work?
I·ATE works on the basis of the relationship between the concept and its designations in the European multilingual environment. The glossary presents a culinary term and its equivalents in the countries in which the concept exists. Every term is linked to a map displaying a geographical area that indicates how gastronomy can go beyond national borders. This leads to a historical reflexion linked to a cultural and common traditional heritage.
