TermCoord in Conferences: 22/11/2018 – Ionian University (Corfu)

There is a new addition to Termcoord’s collaboration with universities. This time it is a Greek university, specifically, the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting of the Ionian University, in Corfu, Greece. The department that opened in 1986 is the only university department in Greece offering translation and interpretation at a BA level.

Undergraduate students will take on terminology work as part of their studies, predominantly during the 3rd and 4th year, when they start translating specialised texts that require terminology documentation. The aim of the collaboration is to feed IATE with terms in domains such as Competition Law and Life Sciences, which will then be entered onto bilingual databases in Greek and English, or French or German. Vilelmini Sosoni, Michael Politis, Sotirios Keramidas, and Olaf Immanuel Seel are the professors who will supervise the terminology work within the university. Postgraduate students at the same university could also participate in the terminology projects.

On Thursday 22nd, Rodolfo Maslias and Stella Tsobanou, who are permanent staff members of the EP Terminology Coordination Unit, alongside the current terminology trainees Ioannis Bersos and Olga Vamvaka, gave a short presentation to the students via Skype. They presented the unit’s work and responsibilities, the IATE database, as well as its collaboration with universities and practical information about the terminology work.

We hope that the launch of this new collaboration is going to offer students an enriching and productive experience, with the collaboration fruitful for all those involved.
