Terminology without Borders

Terminology without Borders (TWB) is an initiative of Directorate-General for Translation (DG TRAD) of the European Parliament that connects universities with EU terminology work.

The aim of this academic cooperation is twofold. On the one hand, it allows the European Parliament to disseminate its mission and vision on multilingualism, focusing on translation and consistent use of EU terminology. On the other hand, it gives universities a key role in bridging the gap between official terminology and citizens by delving into the intricacies of language and multilingual communication. Universities will also gain an insight into the meticulous terminology work in the European institutions and will contribute to the valuable EU terminology management system IATE.

Terminology without Borders’ partners work on official terminology projects, involving terms in IATE owned by the European Parliament. They are entrusted with adding missing languages to existing high-quality entries, thus enriching the available content. Progressively, these entries will be completed in the 24 official languages of the EU, and in certain cases, non-EU languages will also be taken on board.

The projects’ domains and subdomains follow the EuroVoc classification (21 domains and 127 sub-domains). These domains describe the content of documents in the online gateway to EU Law, EUR-Lex, and IATE is based on this classification.
