TERMINOLOGY in the AREA of COMMUNICATION
and
COINING MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY on the WEB
TermCoord has been invited to speak about terminology at this conference for medical translators.
The presentation, which will open the Conference, will consist of two parts:
A presentation on terminology management in the multilingual and multinational EU, which provides 80% of the national legislation of 28 countries. Terminology management serves some 5000 translators and interpreters, working in 24 languages, across ten institutions and 58 specialised agencies, and is needed in order to ensure the linguistic consistency of legislative procedures which are drawn up in a process that makes use of translation and interpretation in 552 possible linguistic combinations. TermCoord undertakes this highly important and complex institutional task, while also taking into account the requirements and benefits of global communication, the evolution of academic research in the field of terminology and the development of IT tools to aid and complement linguistic work. Communication about EU Terminology takes place on three levels:
Ø internally, to raise awareness of the importance of terminology to ensure quality of the original texts and translations that become official legislative texts in each country.
Ø among the 10 EU Institutions managing the IATE database. The new interinstitutional terminology portal, EurTerm, has been developed by TermCoord on behalf of all institutions, and allows cooperation, sharing of resources, storage and automated consultation of research results and communication on both concept and term level in each language.
Ø and with the external world of terminology; international organisations like the UN and NGOs, universities and research centres and networks and also the big multinational companies which produce and offer important terminology resources in specialised fields. Communicating EU Terminology to the world benefits the quality and consistency of the of EU legislation in all domains and translated in 24 languages, and offers a very rich resource to the public in the form of the IATE database, which contains 8.5 million terms in 110 domains and receives an average of 3,500 hits per hour.
The second part will focus on; adapting TermCoord’s methods for coining and monitoring terminology to the specific needs of medical translation and interpretation, targeted terminological research using on-line medical documentation and bibliography and the need for an ontological approach in the construction and taxonomy of terminological databases in the wide and multidisciplinary domain of Health.
