FAIRterm Online Workshop

790

On 19 and 20 May 2022, TermCoord had the honour to welcome in Luxembourg two professors from the University of Padova in Italy: Federica Vezzani and Giorgio Maria Di Nunzio. On the first day of their visit, a workshop of the FAIRterm Web Application took place online, attracting more than 50 participants from all over the world.

The FAIRterm workshop was divided into three major parts. The first one was theoretical, introductory, and covered topics such as Open Science and Fair Principles, offering at the same time valuable insights on the FAIR Terminology paradigm and the ISO standards for Terminology Management. Giorgio Di Nunzio elaborated on the definition of data and their significance, before moving to the guiding principles of FAIR Web Application and the advantages of the FAIR approach.  The second part was the practical one, as it focused more on FAIRterm practical exercises in individual and collaborative mode. Federica Vezzani continued with examples that are more tangible and the FAIR Terminology Paradigm.

The third and last part was dedicated to questions of the participants.

Getting to know FAIRterm

FAIRterm is a free Web Application for the compilation of multilingual terminological records.

Federica Vezzani, assistant professor in French language and translation at the Department of Linguistics and Literary Studies of the University of Padova and professor Di Nunzio of the Department of Information Engineering of the University of Padova, came up with the development of this tool following a series of reflections on how to optimally organize and visualize terminological (meta)data produced in research, teaching, and corporate contexts.

The “FAIR terminology” paradigm was born during Federica Vezzani’s PhD degree. The paradigm gathers a series of guidelines to model and structure terminological (meta)data and resources in order to meet the principles of Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability and Reusability (FAIR).

It enables users to have structurally standardized data and to visualize these data in a more user-friendly way.

The Terminology Coordination Unit of the European Parliament through the Terminology without Borders initiative embraced the FAIR project to the point of integrating its application as a working tool for YourTerm projects in various domains. Terminology without Borders creates a global network of universities and language professionals, translators, linguists and terminologists from all around the world.
