On 2-4 December 2022, the International Scientific Conference “Humanities in the Information Society – IV” was held at the Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University, Georgia. The conference, divided into nine sections, was attended by almost 200 Georgian and foreign scientists and researchers.

During the “Corpus Linguistics and Translation Studies” section, Nana Gogia presented her research entitled “How New Terms Are Created and Introduced into Legislative and Other Institutional Texts” (In light of approximation of the legislation of Georgia with EU standards).

The presentation addressed the following issues:

  • ongoing translation and terminological activities in state institutions of Georgia to fulfil the important prerequisites for the successful implementation of the requirements of the EU-Georgia Association Agreement, i.e. the translation of EU legislation into Georgian and the unification of specialised terminology;
  • the steps taken by the state of Georgia to address these challenges;
  • the steps to be taken by the state of Georgia to systematize and properly coordinate the process of large-scale translation and terminology work in state institutions;
  • inconsistences on the example of maritime terminology introduced in sector benchmarks of higher education and recommendations for eliminating these inconsistencies;
  • collaboration with the Terminology Coordination Unit of the Europeam Parliament within the framework of the project “Terminology without Borders” and the importance of this collaboration in harmonising new specialized terms and concepts; and
  • the need for more active state support for coordinated cooperation between the state and academic institutions for the further development of national terminology with a view to EU integration.
